Dionysos is a god of death and rebirth, drunkenness, fertility, fruit, homosexuality and queerness [spg], parties and festivities, religious ecstasy, ritual madness, theatre, transfemininity [spg], vegetation, viticulture and wine, and wilderness. They are an embodiment of zoë (life) itself.
Contrary to the popular belief that Dionysos is a foreign god who came to Greece, they actually pre-date Greek society (evidence of his name was found in Mycenaean Linear B). They are the child of Zeus and Semele and in some myths the reincarnation of Zagreus. He is sometimes one of the Olympians. They are married to Ariadne, the mortal princess of Crete and perhaps Lady of the Labyrinth, but have many lovers, including Ampelos and Erigone.
Ζαγρεύς
Zagreus
Zagreus is a god of death and rebirth, snow and winter [upg], and the underworld. According to a fragment from Alcmeonis, he is "highest of all gods," perhaps highest of the underworld. They are sometimes the child of Hades and sometimes identified with Hades himself.
In the Orphic mysteries, Zagreus was the first incarnation of Dionysos. He is the bull-horned child of Zeus or Hades and Persephone and the sibling of Melinoë. Although baby Zagreus fought bravely, the Titans dismembered, cooked, and ate them at Hera's request, except for their heart, which Athena saved and brought to Zeus. Zeus made his heart into a potion, which Semele drank and conceived Dionysos.
Favourite myths.
- Dionysos overhears Ariadne crying to herself and venting about how he's no better than Theseus, how she's heartbroken. Dionysos kisses away Ariadne's tears and crowns her with stars, naming her after himself as his equal
- The Bacchae
- Zeus smote the Titans for murdering baby Zagreus, thus humans were born from their ashes. Dionysos is the divine spark of the human soul
